Zero’s Garb Variety Pack: A retailer exclusive pre-order item, this DLC contains three alternate costume color schemes for Zero. Available through the PlayStation Store, this latest drop of content includes many of the items previously available only through pre-order or Collector's Edition means. The final batch of downloadable content for Drakengard 3 is set to release today, allowing players to "complete their inventories" with a variety of premium items up for purchase.

While its spin-off series, Nier has found much love in the west with the release of 2017's Nier Automata opening up the rest of the series to the public eye, Drakengard's success was mostly domestic while remaining in cult classic obscurity internationally. Yet this year's replay felt different, somehow more engaging probably due to my knowledge of how far the series has gone since then. My relationship with the Drakengard (or Drag-on Dragoon as it's known in Asian territories) series is a long one and I'm no stranger to replaying these games in general. And what better way to start than one of my personal favorites of all time, Cavia's 2003 cult classic Drakengard. In a year where most publishers released remasters and remakes, it only felt appropriate to look back on some of the series that defined my taste. From crowd pleasers like Pokémon Platinum to more niche entries like Mistwalker's The Last Story, I've replayed a lot in an eager attempt to fill in the gaps in my nonexistent backlog. Some games are spin-offs, but this franchise has spun way off.2020 has been a rough year but it's also been a year that's been mostly marked with replays of some of my most beloved games.
Although an alternate ending connects Drakengard and Nier, the main stories and characters have basically nothing to do with each other. That, in turn, leads to the most recent entry in the series, Nier: Automata, which is set thousands of years after Nier. This disease annihilated most of the human race and set up the story for Nier, where the protagonist fought to save himself and his sister from the fallout in this post-apocalyptic land. Their deaths spread their magical essence across the land, causing a devastating disease for the humans who live there. Although the duo successfully destroyed the evil creature, Tokyo's government saw them as a threat, using their air force to kill them both. This brought them to 2003 Tokyo, where Caim and the dragon were stranded. Caim used the seeds to open another portal and fought the creature through it. One of Drakengard's possible endings showed a gigantic demonic being emerge through the portal. Though Caim fought valiantly with his dragon companion's help, The Watchers ultimately acquired all the seeds and opened the portal. Each seed was stored inside one of the various kingdoms, and The Watchers' powerful empire had conquered all but one the one Caim fought for.
These seeds could be put together to create a portal to another dimension and summon an evil being to destroy humanity. The story of Drakengard began generations later when a hero named Caim fought against The Watchers, who sought out the seeds of destruction. These children would create a cult known as The Watchers. Of course, things are never that easy, as one of the sisters created a clone of herself, who went on to have children which possessed the intoners' powers. By the end of Drakengard 3 she completed her mission and destroyed all the intoners- including herself. After Zero discovered that the intoners' power came from an evil flower who wanted to destroy humanity, she set out to kill her sisters in an effort to stop this plan from reaching fruition. The player controlled Zero, who along with her intoner sisters, could control magic through song. Drakengard 3 took place in the fantasy setting of Cathedral City and its surroundings.
