So a hi-res file can be 24-bit/44.1kHz, where bit-depth is higher than CD quality but sampling rate is the same, and vice versa.

It also has a £250 ($250, AU$300) annual subscription called Studio Sublime that combines hi-res streaming with discounts on 24-bit download purchases.įirst things first, should you care about hi-res streaming? High-resolution (often shortened to 'hi-res') audio is a term used to describe music files that have a higher sampling frequency and/or bit depth than that of CD-quality, which is specified at 16-bit/44.1kHz. Qobuz, which was actually first to the hi-res streaming game (except in Australia, where it only launched in 2021) is still kicking about with a £15 ($15 and now, AU$25) per month hi-res service.

So, is Tidal HiFi Plus the answer? It's certainly one answer, but there are other options. More recently, Tidal actually split its membership options into HiFi (with a resolution cap of 1411kbps, aka CD-quality streams) and HiFi Plus, offering up to 9216kbps along with Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 Reality support, for the top-tier £20 fee. Since January 2017, its £20 ($20, AU$24) per month tier has granted access to hi-res (typically 24-bit/96kHz) Tidal Master streams, encoded using MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) technology. It is our favourite service, too, and holder of a 2021 What Hi-Fi? Award in the music streaming service category. It's also been a very stable app during the times I used it.Tidal is perhaps the most established in this realm. However, unless I do specific A/B comparisons, I wouldn't say that the sound quality using ConnectHD is bad. I found that ConnectHD tends to offer up a narrower soundstage compared to the other options. I can consistently hear a difference between ConnectHD and Roon/Qobuz UPnP, but it's not a massive difference and one, when bearing in mind App cost, is one that most can likely live with. It's purely a matter of stability for me. If that does happen and it's more stable as a result, I'll very likely drop Roon.ĭuring extensive listening tests, I cannot hear any difference between Roon (the way I use it) and Qobuz direct via UPnP. I suspect, but don't know, that Qobuz will get that Beta version working better in order to compete with Tidal and their new Tidal Connect option. In fairness, the Qobuz UPnP option is clearly denoted as a Beta version at present. When I stream directly from Qobuz on my MacBook to my amp using UPnP, I occasionally get drop outs. I'm not sure I'll renew it next year, but I'll make that decision there and then, no need to decide now. I've bought an annual subscription to Roon. Justmeagain: PC, Ipad, Panasonic TX-50CX802B, Yamaha RX-A2050 Receiver, Monitor Audio Apex surround system speakers. I prefer not to connect the ipad via wire/lightening cable direct to the receiver. Are there any methods of streaming Qobuz Hi-Res material from an ipad to my Yamaha receiver while keeping the original hi-res quality? The Yamaha has a superb DAC for hi-res music and can play most formats including FLAC (which I tend to use).

This means any music being sent by the ios Qobuz app to my receiver via Bluetooth looses quality. I recently found out that Bluetooth compresses sound files. Sometimes I play my purchases via bluetooth if I can't be bothered to turn the computer on upstairs to connect the ethernet connected server. I usually do this for new music I have not heard.

However, I also regularly stream Qobuz Hi-Res music from my Ipad (2020) via bluetooth to the receiver.

The sound is then played through a Monitor Audio Apex surround system.

I have purchased quite a few Hi-Res albums off the service which I stream from my PC over the network via ethernet to a Yamaha RX-A2050 Receiver. I have used Qobuz music streaming for 5 years and am more than pleased with it.
